Capsicum praetermissum
Please support The Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation

Quite often assumed to be a Capsicum baccatum, this wild chile with up to 1cm long, ovoid, very pungent fruit, is actually not a member of that species. It is, however, regarded as a member of what is often referred to as the Baccatum Complex, but it remains a distinct, yet related species.

Capsicum praetermissum plants display 3 to 5 foot, somewhat whippy branches of rather dishevelled, straggly spreading growth, and their diminutive fruit -- reminiscent of chiltepin pods -- though highly pungent, are somewhat short on any truly distinctive or markworthy flavour characteristics.

Well worth growing out of purely horticultural or botanical interest, and maybe sampling the fruit out of pure curiosity; their ultimate culinary value, however, remains at best unclear and probably for that reason little explored to date.
